Jane Scanlon

July 17, 1922 - June 19, 2018


Began her college studies in physics, but later become more interested in the abstract nature of mathematics. Received her Ph.D. in mathematics in 1949 from the University of Michigan. Her thesis was on "Branch Points of Solutions of Equations in Banach Space." Parts of the dissertation were published in the Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, Vol. 69 (1950) [Abstract, Paper]. Worked for the Air Force and the American Optical Company before moving to academics. Taught at Rutgers University from 1965 until her retirement in 1991. Her research interests were in mathematical biology and partial differential equations. She was the 1985 Emmy Noether Lecturer for the AWM and in 1989 presented the Pi Mu Epsilon Sutherland Frame Lecture at the summer AMS/MAA joint meeting.
